Happy Thanksgiving

We at Surf Monkey Fellowship are thankful for plaster-of-paris, irregularly painted, monkeys that are actually chimpanzees on surf boards.  We our thankful for our neighbors South of the border who decided 40 some years ago that crazy gringos to the North might actually buy these things, and we are thankful for all our friends who recognize fine art when they see it.

We are thankful for you!

Skip Frye honored at California Surf Festival. Wife Donna going home with the Real Prize

Legendary surfer, shaper and all around really-decent human being Skip Frye received the Silver Surfer award at the California Surf Festival.

The monkey congratulated him shortly after receiving his prestigious award.

It was his wife Donna, however, who went home with the real prize. Four-year-old Allena, representing Surf Monkey Fellowship, decided that Donna needed to bring home a Surf Monkey of her very own. Donna couldn’t have been happier.  Cameras were snapping all around as she, who has been a long-time and much-loved San Diego City Council woman and should have been our mayor if it wasn’t for a kooky vote-counting technicality, cradled her newly adopted monkey (along with 4-year-old Allena).

Yeah Skip, your Silver Surfer award was pretty cool with all the fanfare, loads of famous surfers saying really fantastic things about you, etc., but Donna getting a Surf Monkey, I mean a SURF MONKEY, can anything really compete with that?  Sorry Bro, we love you, but Donna scored tonight.

OCEANIDES: A Surf Movie about Women and the Oceans

A gorgeous new surf flick from French Director Lorene Cartentier. Changa was at the San Diego premiere.

The director fielded questions from the audience then gave Changa a big French smooch.  Surf Monkey Fellowship was so taken by the movie that they arranged for one of the first international adoptions of a Surf Monkey.  Needless to say, both Lorene and Changa were thrilled!

Singe chanceux peu!

(which we at Surf Monkey Fellowship think means “Lucky little monkey!” Our apologies if we’ve accidentally said something offensive.  Our French is a bit rusty).

Monkeyin’ around at Sacred Craft

Sacred Craft is a surf expo that’s all about honoring the craft of board making.  This little monkey went there to see if he could get a little plaster repair for his ride.

Instead, he got a little touch up on his head from surfboard artist extraordinaire Drew Brophy. We at Surf Monkey Fellowship thank you for this bro, his hairline has never looked better!

Chango uttered some inappropriate words when he saw the Paul Frank monkey donning a couple of surf boards.  “That dad gum, big box-store monkey is a hodad.  He doesn’t surf” etc.etc.

Chango calmed down a bit when he was able to meet legendary shaper Carl Ekstrom, who also happened to be this years honoree.

Great day seeing old friends (like Izzy from Surf Diva and JP from SurfySurfy) and meeting new ones.
And mostly we’re grateful the evening didn’t end in fisticuffs between Chango and that other monkey.  We know who would’ve won.

A Night to Remember, Ooh Ooh Aah Aah Ayayayay!

A Fantastic Fiesta in honor of the Surf Monkey’s Birthday.  After 40+ years of roaming the Mexico/U.S. borderlands, this little monkey FINALLY got a proper birthday celebration thanks to Surf Monkey Fellowship founder, Beth Slevcove, and Surf Diva founders Coco Tihanyi and her sister Izzy (not shown).

The night was capped off by the raffle of the Much-Sought-After and Very-Rare Golden Monkey.  (And did we mention VALUABLE, what with the price of gold these days).  The winner was Emma and she could not have been happier.
